Masters World Cup: A great showing for New Zealand

With a mixture of seasoned internationals and players who have taken the step from club hockey to international representation later in life, our Masters demonstrated the best example of sporting endeavours at all ages this year.

Spain were lucky enough to have them for two tournaments; the Barcelona Grand Masters World Cup (for men and women in the 60+ and 65+ bracket and men in the 70+ and 75+ age group) and the Exin Masters World Cup in Terrassa, Spain for 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+ and 60+ year-old men and women.

After a mixed bag of results throughout the two World Cups, our Women’s 60+ had an outstanding finish to capture a Silver Medal against long-time rivals England. The team started fast winning their first 3 games, including strong wins against two Australian teams. Maeve Morrison was effective in the attacking circle finishing with 5 goals for the tournament supported by a consistent team over the 10 days of competition.

A very significant section of our NZ contingent were the 18 strong Umpires officiating across the two
Masters World Cups. Sixteen of those represented us at Terrassa. The team overcame a few hurdles at the beginning of the competition but soon got on with the job in true kiwi spirit and performed very well throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all of you. A special mention goes to Paul Morrison, Kirsten Smith, Sue Anderson, and Vicki Allen who were appointed to their respective finals, with a good number of other kiwis also featuring in important matches.

The team at Hockey New Zealand would like to thank everyone involved from the coaches, managers and chef de mission to the doctor, officials, players and their families. You have all represented the Silver Fern with wonderful respect and sportsmanship. We would like to acknowledge the effort and commitment you have all given to this experience and know you have made many friendships and memories to cherish for life.

Hockey New Zealand is excited to open expressions of interest for the 2019 Trans-Tasman Masters Challenge.

New Zealand will be looking to take back the Trans-Tasman title after Australia took a narrow 55-52 win in 2017.

In 2019 the Masters Trans-Tasman Challenge will be taking place on the Gold Coast, Australia from the 30th April to 5th of May 2019. The biennial international master's tournament started in 2000 and features female and male teams from Australia and New Zealand competing in seven age divisions: Over 35, Over 40, Over 45, Over 50, Over 55, Over 60 and Over 65.

Each age division plays three matches and the nation that wins the most divisions across the men’s and women’s competitions is declared the Trans-Tasman Champion.

The Trans-Tasman Hockey Challenge brings together approximately 608 participants across players, coaches, support staff and officials. The 2019 Trans-Tasman Masters Hockey Challenge will take place at both the Gold Coast Hockey Centre and the Nikki Hudson Centre in Runaway Bay.
