U18 PLAYER PATHWAY

The refreshed U18 player pathway for 2026 onwards is designed to strengthen player development and provide clearer opportunities across the performance system. It looks to strengthen the connection between local, regional and national environments, while continuing to support individual choice and long term development.

While new opportunities are being introduced, the foundations remain the same, with school, club and association hockey continuing to play a central role, players continuing to represent their local teams and regions, and the National U18 Tournament remaining unchanged.

What’s New:

  • Introduction of the U18 Futures Hockey League (FHL)

  • Re-establishment of a New Zealand U18 programme

  • More connected opportunities between local, regional and national environments

Key Principles:

  • Player choice remains central: Participation in pathway opportunities is optional and based on what is right for the individual.

  • Players are encouraged to balance hockey with other sports and commitments

  • The pathway is not linear. Selections at any stage represent a point in time.

  • Talent identification is ongoing. It’s not based on a single moment or event but occurs over time drawing from multiple environments.

* Further information will continue to be shared through Associations and Regional programmes.
