Celebrating 50 Years Since New Zealand's Olympic Gold

Members of New Zealand's historic 1976 Olympic gold medal-winning hockey team came together yesterday to celebrate one of the greatest achievements in our sporting history, marking 50 years since their remarkable triumph in Montréal.

The occasion provided a rare opportunity for teammates to reconnect and reflect on their shared journey and celebrate the legacy of a team that continues to hold a unique place in New Zealand hockey.

The day began with a GO FOR GOLD Tridents-led skills session, proudly supported by Go Hockey NZ, where young players had the chance to meet members of the gold medal-winning side. It was a special opportunity to connect with some of the game's greats, hear stories from their Olympic journey and even hold an Olympic gold medal in their own hands.

Later in the day, the team gathered for a reunion luncheon and pin presentation, recognising their contribution to New Zealand hockey and celebrating the 50th anniversary of their Olympic success.

With teammates now spread throughout New Zealand and abroad, opportunities to bring this group together are increasingly rare, making the occasion all the more meaningful.

Their legacy continues to influence those who follow in their footsteps and serves as a reminder of what can be achieved from our little corner of the world.

As Hockey New Zealand looks ahead to the future, occasions such as this provide an important moment to reflect on the foundations laid by those who came before. The success of the 1976 team remains a benchmark in our history.

Most importantly, it was a chance to thank the players who helped shape New Zealand hockey and whose achievement continues to inspire future generations.
