Growing the Game in Tairua: From 30 to 90 Participants in Six Months

A small community initiative on the Coromandel Peninsula is proving that with passionate local leadership and the right support, hockey can thrive anywhere.

Around six months ago, Tairua locals Derek Rope and Dave Potter saw an opportunity to introduce hockey to young people in their community. Determined to get the game started, they reached out to Colin Chester for assistance in sourcing equipment that would help bring their vision to life.

With the support of Kookaburra New Zealand, a package of hockey equipment was provided, including sticks, shin guards, hockey balls and training cones. What followed has been nothing short of inspirational.

The programme began with approximately 30 children attending introductory sessions. As word spread throughout the community, participation quickly grew. Within a few months, attendance had doubled to around 60 participants, and next week's session is expected to attract more than 90 children eager to learn and play hockey.

The rapid growth has created a demand for additional equipment, with another shipment of hockey gear set to be sent to Tairua in the coming weeks to ensure every child has the opportunity to participate.

For those who have spent years promoting hockey across New Zealand, Tairua's success story reinforces an important lesson: sustainable growth often starts with local champions. Communities don't necessarily need large facilities or extensive resources to get started. More often, they need committed individuals willing to share their passion, create opportunities, and bring people together.

That is exactly what Derek and Dave have achieved.

Through their enthusiasm, dedication, and leadership, they have created an environment where young people can experience the fun, friendship, and lifelong benefits of hockey. Supported by Colin Chester and Kookaburra New Zealand, they have transformed an idea into a thriving community programme that continues to grow week after week.

The success of hockey in Tairua serves as a powerful reminder of what is possible when communities are empowered to lead. It highlights the impact that a small investment in equipment and a large investment in people can have on growing participation and creating positive sporting experiences.

From 30 participants to more than 90 in just six months, Tairua's hockey journey is a story worth celebrating and one that demonstrates the exciting opportunities that exist to grow our game throughout New Zealand.

"Sometimes all it takes is a few dedicated people, a little support, and a passion for hockey to create something truly special.” Colin Chester
